Weightlifting Competition ended yesterday in Delhi
The Weightlifting Competition came to end yesterday in Delhi, India at the XIXth Commonwealth Games with the Men’s +105kg bodyweight category.According to the Entry List, 204 weightlifters competed during the Games with the determination of winning medals for their countries.
The competition proved to be exciting, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was full of curious spectators and knowledgeable professionals. The Minister of Sports Mr. M. S. Gill, the CWG 2010 Competition Manager for Weightlifting Mr. Kumbasi Subramanya and the President of Indian Weightlifting Federation Mr. B.P. Baishya M.P. were besides Dr. Tamás Aján IWF President in order to support athletes performing their attempts on stage.
Among Women 33 Commonwealth Games Records and 2 Commonwealth Records were set, latest by Ele OPELOGE who broke her own Commonwealth Weightlifting Record in the Women’s +75kg bodyweight category and won Samoa’s second Gold medal!Men have reached 12 Commonwealth Games Records and the only Commonwealth Record was set by the Indian lifter Ravi Kumar KATULU in the 69kg bodyweight category while he performed his 3rd attempt in Snatch.
There were 10 medal winning countries among Women, and within them Nigeria excelled with a total of 6 medals won. The ranking follows as: IND/4, CAN/3, AUS/2, CMR/1, ENG/1, MAS/1, SAM/1, SEY/1 and WAL/1. In Men’s competition for the Gold, Silver and Bronze besides Malaysia, Indian lifters proved to be the bests by winning 4-4 medals altogether. The ranking follows as: AUS/3, CAN/2, NGR/2, NRU/2, NZL/2, SAM/2, SCO/2 and SRI/2.
Total medals/countries follows as: IND/8, NGR/8, AUS/5, CAN/5, MAS/5, SAM/3, NRU/2, NZL/2, SRI/2, CMR/1, ENG/1, SCO/1, SEY/1 and WAL/1.
