Weightlifting to enjoy privileged conditions at London 2012

The ExCel venue will host the Weightlifting competition besides six other sports: Boxing, Fencing, Judo, Table Tennis, Taekwondo and Wrestling.

At the time of former visits by the IWF Technical Delegates, the new facilities were not entirely completed. Nevertheless, at 2 Years To Go until the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympic Games, the Exhibition Hall is now taking shape as a sign of solid progress.

IWF President Dr. Tamás Aján said: „We would like to compliment London 2012 on the progress that has been made in terms of organisation and constructions. Despite the still existing financial difficulties, the infrastructure needed and the venues for the Olympic Games are planned to be ready next summer while respecting time and budget constraints.”

In addition to discussion partner Ms. Debbie Jevans, Director of Sport, Mr. David Luckes, Head of Sport Competition and Mr. Matthew Curtain, Weightlifting & Paralympic Powerlifting Manager, Mr. Paul Deighton, Chief Executive Officer of the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) also greeted the IWF representatives before the beginning of the discussions.

During the negociations numerous topics were discussed, however the highest degree improvement is related to the venue update and the detailed layout. London City Airport is adjacent to ExCeL London, and an adequate rail network provides transfer from Royal Victoria Dock Lands to the city center. The Olympic Village is 10kms away.

The Olympic Weightlifting Hall is accomodated to receive about 6000 spectators. Most of the facilities as well as the training areas will be incorporated in the venue, which is splendid information for the athletes. 50 platforms will be provided for the training. A test event for London 2012 Olympic Games is planned to take place on the 11th of December 2011.

International Technical Officials will have their quarters nearby the venue and that will considerably facilitate their activity.

With the words of Mr. Attila Ádámfi Competition Director: „We are grateful that the London 2012 Organizing Commitee ensures such significant conditions for Weightlifting sport, athletes, and ITOs. This represents a remarkable success for both hosts and participants.”
