FOCUS ON IWF

IWF PRESIDENT AT THE ASIAN GAMES

IWF President Dr. Tamás Aján is in Guangzhou, China participating at the 16th Asian Games as Technical Delegate and IOC Member.

According to his remarks, “A remarkable work has been done by the Organizers, and great conditions are ensured to the weightlifting competitions”.

Besides him, Mr. Shri Birendra Prasad Baishya, President of the Indian Weightlifting Federation is also present at Dongguan Gymnasium to watch the performance of the Teams as well as IOC Members and IWF leaders.


SEMINARS UNDER THE GUIDANCE OF THE IWF

In the category of Regional and Continental Federations of the IWF Development Program, Malta received the financial support of the IWF and organized a scientific seminar held during the Mediterranean Cup on the 23rd of October 2010. Representatives from 10 countries attended the high quality course.

The other interesting lecture for Weightlifting Coaches took place in Bratislava under the IWF Development Program on the 6th of November. The Agenda included optimization of training loads, periodicities of strength, selection process of Young Weightlifters grass route and specificities of building muscles.

Both courses gave important scientific, technical and educational bases for the attendees, and were held with the participation of recognized experts.


INTERNATIONAL FEDERATION DEBRIEF ON THE VERY FIRST
YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES

The Singapore Youth Olympic Games IF Debrief was held by the ASOIF and the IOC on Wednesday the 3rd of October 2010 in the Olympic Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.

The meeting was led by Mr. Sergei Bubka, IOC Member and Chairman of the IOC Coordination Committee for YOG. Representatives of SYOGOC, ASOIF and the International Federations attended the session. The IWF was represented by President Dr. Tamas Ajan, and Competition Director Mr. Attila Adamfi.

All IFs emphasized that the first edition of the Youth Olympic Games was a great success thanks to the devoted work of the Singapore Organizing Committee.

Beside the key positive factors, serious conversations were launched about issues to improve the next edition of the Youth Olympic Games 2014.

Participants discussed among others Qualification, allocation process of Universality Places, Age limits and International Federation involvement in the Cultural and Education Program.



 

IWF GRAND PRIX

IWF CONTINENTAL CLUBS GRAND PRIX

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) organizes an IWF Grand Prix that is an individual qualification competition to be held in Penang, Malaysia from 11 to 16 December 2010.

The deadline for all Clubs and Federations to send their Final Entry Forms is Saturday November 20. We await every athlete willing to participate to fill in the required forms, and send the documents to the Organizing Committee Chairman Mr. Dato’ Ong Poh Eng ([email protected]), Event Director Mr. Paul Coffa ([email protected]) and IWF Competition Director Mr. Attila Adamfi ([email protected]) by the end of this week.

All necessary information including Regulation, Final Entry Form Men / Women, Accommodation Form can be found on our Website (www.iwf.net).

CALENDAR EVENTS

A SMALL PEEK AT THE 16th ASIAN GAMES GUANGZHOU, CHINA

After the third day of competition, Chinese lifters are dominating the field. According to the medal standings, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea has won a total of five, just like their strongest competitor China.

The Champion of the 2010 Antalya World Championships Wu Jingbiao (CHN) won the first Weightlifting gold medal in Dongguan Gymnasium on Saturday November 13.
He set a new Asian Record in Snatch by performing 1kg more (133 kg) than the previous record holder Long Qingquan (CHN) at the Beijing Olympics.

Second place went to Cha Kum Chol from DPR Korea with a Total of 276kg, while the Indonesian lifter Setiadi Jadi settled for the bronze medal.

In Women’s 48 kg Wang Mingjuan (CHN) lifted a Total of 210kg and defended her title at the 16th Asian Games Guangzhou. The lifter Laosirikul Pensiri (THA) took the silver while Chen Weiling from Chinese Taipei gained the bronze by lifting almost 20kg less than the gold medalist from China.

Zhang Jie (CHN) proved to be the best in Men’s 62kg bodyweight category right before Kim Un Guk (PRK) silver medalist and Irawan Eko Yuli (INA) who finished on the third place.

During the second day of competition, in Women’s 53kg the Chinese lifter Li Ping broke two World Records. She performed 103kg in Snatch and broke the previous record set by Ri Song Hui (PRK) in 2002. She secured her gold and broke the record in Total during her second attempt of the Clean & Jerk. Second place went to Chinshanlo Zulfiya (KAZ), and Jaroenrattanatarakoon Prapawadee (THA), Beijing Olympic gold medalist took the bronze.

The third day of the Asian Games gave place to Men’s 69kg and Women’s 58kg competitions. Kim Kum Sok lifted a Total of 324kg in Men’s 69kg category and ended up first right before the Iranian lifter Rezaeian Morteza. After raising 143kg in Snatch, Tryatno (INA) lifted 178kg in Clean & Jerk and secured his third place.

Competition is at its height, and pressure is still on for those who will perform in the next few days.

MEDITERRANEAN WEIGHTLIFTING CUP, MALTA

The 5th Men's and Women's Mediterranean Weightlifting Cup was held in Bormla, Malta 22-25 October 2010.

Lifters out of 9 countries participated on the competition. According to the Team Classification, Turkey finished as first followed by Italy, Israel and Malta who managed to take the respectable 4th place. Dr. Tamás Aján, IWF President attended the competition that took place in the Cottonera Sports Complex.

IWF DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM IN GHANA

A Weightlifting Educational Seminar will be held in Ghana from 22 to 24 November. The complex course is organized in the framework of the IWF Development Program, and will deal with important coaching, nutrition and technical issues.

Organizing such courses regularly on the African continent has a great impact on the development of weightlifting and gives useful knowledge to the attendees on the basic requirements and technical rules of our sport.  

Lectures will be held by a renowned and experienced expert Mr. András Szabó, Professor at the Hungarian Corvinus University. Besides up-to-date information on nutrition and food-supplement, he will present studies on special warm up and training systems to complement training programs.

We would like to congratulate to the new Ghanaian President and leadership, and hope that to achieve further progress on the Continent, as well as in world competitions, they will pursue their efforts on the path of development. 

The IWF notices with great admiration the devoted work of Mr. Husseini Akueteh Addy, General Secretary of the Ghanaian Weightlifting Federation in order to elaborate a successful course.

UPCOMING EVENT

2010 EUROPEAN JUNIOR & UNDER 23 WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS, CYPRUS


The city of Limassol, on the south coast of Cyprus, will host the 2010 European Junior & Under 23 Weightlifting Championships, to be held from the 19th until 28th of November.

The official time schedule will be announced after the verification of Final Entries during the Technical Meeting on 20 November 2010.

According to the provisory time schedule, competitions will start on November 22nd and end on the 27th.

OLYMPIC NEWS

OLYMPIC SOLIDARITY COURSE, ARGENTINA


In the framework of the Olympic Solidarity Program, Argentina will organize a course for weightlifters and coaches to be held on the 18-29 November 2010.


The well known and recognized lecturer Mr. Marcelino del Frade (CUB), member of the IWF Technical Committee, from the Pan-American continent was appointed by the IWF to hold the lectures.  

This is again a great example for all IWF National Federations that through their National Olympic Committee they can apply for Olympic Solidarity funds.
