RIO 2016 MAKING STEADY PROGRESS ON ROAD TO GAMES

Source: RIOTUR

Preparations for the first Olympic Games to be held in South America are continuing to progress well, according to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)’s Coordination Commission for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

The Commission, in Rio de Janeiro for the second time since the Brazilian city was awarded the Games in October 2009, received progress reports on a wide range of issues, conducted a venue tour, and met with government officials during its three-day visit that concluded today.

Rio 2016 has made great strides as an organisation. It has developed good plans, made an excellent start to its marketing programme, and strong integration can be seen across its departments and with its stakeholders. The Commission was most impressed by the high quality of people that have been hired to work on the project.

IOC STEPS UP EFFORTS IN FIGHT AGAINST IRREGULAR AND ILLEGAL BETTING IN SPORT

A Working Group established on 1 March 2011 at the first meeting on irregular and illegal sports betting agreed today to set up three sub-groups to flesh out objectives in the fight against irregular and illegal betting in sport. The Working Group also agreed that more needed to be done to strengthen the cooperation between sports, governments and betting operators to fight irregular and illegal betting.

“We foresee increased cooperation in the monitoring and coordination of the fight against illegal and irregular betting in sport,” said President Rogge.

The IOC first took preventative measures to tackle the problem of illegal and irregular betting five years ago, and has been proactive in its fight ever since. The IOC’s Code of Ethics was amended in 2006 to forbid all participants in the Olympic Games from betting on Olympic events, and subsequent measures have been aimed at raising awareness of the issue, safeguarding the integrity of the Olympic Games and sport in general, and strengthening collaboration with partners inside and outside the Olympic Movement.

ANTI-DOPING NEWS

IMPROVED RESEARCH TECHNIQUES FROM WADA-FUNDED STUDY

WADA is confident that new survey techniques will allow the agency to gain greater insight into the prevalence of athletes who use performance-enhancing substances.

One of the problems faced by researchers is that athletes who have doped also fail to give honest answers when completing confidential questionnaires - no matter how much their anonymity is guaranteed.

Results from a recent study part-funded by WADA have confirmed that individuals who have taken banned drugs are likely to manipulate answers so they fit the image of someone who is clean, even strongly anti doping.

The study was carried out by a team headed by Professor Andrea Petroczi from the School of Life Sciences at Kingston University in London.
