FOCUS ON IWF

WADA'S IF RELATIONS DIRECTOR WAS RECEIVED BY DR.TAMAS AJÁN

Frédéric Donzé, the newly appointed Director of WADA's European Regional Office and International Federations Relations came to Budapest, Hungary for a meeting with IWF President Dr. Tamás Aján and the IWF Secretariat staff.

They discussed several topics in regard to the IWF Anti-Doping activities, the cooperation of the two organisations and the efficient implementation and enforcement of WADA rules in weightlifting.

Mr. Donzé accepted the IWF’s invitation to speak at the IWF World Anti-Doping Conference in Istanbul, Turkey.


DR. AJÁN ATTENDS EWF EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING

Dr. Tamás Aján, IWF President and EWF Honorary President participated in the European Weightlifting Federation's Executive Board meeting in Rome on February 19. Three IWF presentations were shown to the EWF Board:

* London 2012 status Report


IWF PRESIDENT MET COPAG REPRESENTATIVES IN GUADALAJARA

The President of the International Federation of Weightlifting, Dr. Tamas Aján, concluded a visit to Guadalajara, where he met Mr. Ivar Sisniega, Sports and Operation Director of the Pan American Games Organizing Committee (COPAG), Mr. Valentin Yanes, Technical Sports Director of COPAG and Dr. Rosalio Alvarado President of the Mexican Weightlifting Federation.

They had meaningful discussions about the preparations of the XVI Pan American Games to be held in Guadalajara, Mexico on 23-27 October 2011. During the meeting, adjustments were made in regard of the facility and the competition schedule.

The IWF President underlined the importance for the Mexican Weightlifting Federation to work hand in hand with the Pan American Games Organizing Committee in order to progress efficiently in preparations and deliver a successful weightlifting competition.


ANOC PRESIDENT MET DR. TAMAS AJÁN

IWF President Dr. Tamás Aján met Mario Vasquez Rana, President of the Association of National Olympic Committees and President of the Pan-American Sports Organisation in Mexico City last week. They had a highly profitable discussion regarding to the Olympic Movement and relevant issues concerning International Sports.

 

CONTINENTAL FEDERATIONS

PAN-AMERICAN WEIGHTLIFTING FEDERATION CONGRESS

IWF President Dr. Tamas Aján attended the Pan-American Weightlifting Federation (PAWF) Congress in Mexico City on 18 February 2011.

IWF President participated in the annual meeting of this fast developing continent besides representatives from 21 countries. The event was the highlight of the weightlifting sport on the Pan-American continent. The IWF is thankful to Mr. William Ozuna, President of the Pan-American Weightlifting Federation and to Mr. Rosalio Alvarado, President of the MWF for the outstanding conditions ensured at the Congress in Mexico City.



PARTNER ORGANISATIONS

EU SPORT FORUM 2011

The Presidency of the Council of the European Union rotates between the 27 member states every six months. Hungary took over the Presidency of the EU on January 1, 2011.

On February 22-23 in Budapest, Hungary the European Commission organized the EU Sport Forum as key platform for dialogue held for the third time. 

Besides leading representatives from International and European Sport Organisations, Governmental and Non Governmental Organisations, representatives from the Olympic and sport movement Dr. Tamás Aján, IOC Honorary Member and President of the IWF was also in attendance.

The EU Sports Commissioner Ms. Androulla Vassiliou from Cyprus promised that greater attention will be given to sporting issues within the European Union. She added that the European Union's budget will include a separate chapter on financial support for sport.

In the future, the European Sport Ministers wish to extend the area of sport development especially focusing on the expansion of possibilities for the rising sport generation through a program named “Sport for ALL” and on the improvement of fight against doping.


INTERVENTION OF DR. TAMAS AJÁN AT THE EU SPORT FORUM

During the EU Sport Forum held in Budapest, Hungary Dr. Tamás Aján, IOC Honorary Member and President of the IWF took part in the general debate with the EU Sport Ministers and made a comment of a great interest in regard of corruption in sport.

He told the assembly that sport has to overcome the problem and called for rapid action against all forms of corruption. Dr. Tamás Aján also specified that the involvement of the EU, the contribution of Sports Leaders and more public awareness is needed to completely eradicate corruption in sport on every level.

IWF 2010 ANNUAL BOOK BY GOTTFRIED SCHÖDL PUBLISHED!

Everything that happened in 2010 in the world of weightlifting and can be expressed in data, and much more... Mr. Gottfried Schödl's Annual Book summarizing and analysing the Championships results, records, Sinclair lists, etc. for the year 2010 has now been published on this website. Look it up in the Results menu under Statistics. In addition to full results of the Junior, Senior and University World Championships and related data, the 21st edition of this indispensable tool for weightlifting journalists, officials and statistics fans reveals highly interesting statistics of the IWF's activities in a historical perspective. Copies on CD will be distributed to the NFs.

 

NATIONAL FEDERATIONS

A TRAGIC LOSS FOR WEIGHTLIFTING

It is with the deepest sorrow that the IWF has to inform the Weightlifting Family about the death of two promising athletes, members of the Venezuelan National Team. Henry José Blanco Ruíz (20) and Ricardo José Pérez Córdova (19) both died in a tragic car accident last week. The IWF expressed its condolences to the Venezuelan Weightlifting Federation and offers its sympathy to the families.

2011 ARNOLD WEIGHTLIFTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

The competition will be held in Columbus Unites States at the Greater Columbus Convention Center (GCCC) on 4-6 March 2011.

HALIFAX 2011 CANADA GAMES

Jeane Lassen, 2008 Olympian and 2006 World medalist is currently at the Canada Games in Halifax, Nova Scotia as a member of Team Yukon Mission Staff. Jeane, a school teacher and strength & conditioning coach is supporting the Women's Hockey team. The Canada Games, established in 1967, (www.canadagames.ca) is the pathway to excellence for many of Canada's top athletes including top sporting personalities. In 1995, Jeane won a weightlifting silver medal at the young age of 14 and still owns the Games record in the Clean & Jerk.


30TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CAAWS

Moira Lassen, IWF Technical Committee member and Chair Elect of Canadian Association for the Advancement of Women and Sport (CAAWS) will present the welcoming address on to celebrate International Women's Day (March 8) in Ottawa, Canada's capital city. The celebrations are also in recognition of the 30th Anniversary of the CAAWS.
